What is 11SMnPb37?

11SMnPb37 (material number 1.0737) is a high-sulphur, high-phosphorus leaded free-cutting structural steel to EN 10087, in which manganese sulphide inclusions and dispersed lead particles break chips and extend tool life. Supplied cold drawn at about 415 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile and 163 HB, it is the default bar for high-volume screw-machine and sliding-headstock work: screws, fittings, bushings and small pneumatic or hydraulic parts. Ductility and impact toughness are low, it is effectively unweldable, corrosion resistance is below plain carbon steel, and the lead content brings RoHS/REACH and occupational-hygiene constraints; 11SMn30 or bismuth grades are the lead-free alternatives. 11SMnPb37 has a density of 7.86 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 90% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 11SMnPb37 has a yield strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — weaker than 56% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with 11SMnPb37

Is 11SMnPb37 easy to machine?

Benchmark free-cutting steel: 160 % of AISI 1212, runs at high speed on cam and CNC screw machines with excellent chip break and surface finish; use good coolant and avoid grinding/burning Pb-bearing swarf.

Can 11SMnPb37 be welded?

Not weldable in practice — high S, P and Pb cause hot cracking and porosity; use mechanical joining or specify 11SMn30/low-S grades if welding is required.

Can 11SMnPb37 be formed, bent or molded?

Poor cold formability: fine for light knurling, thread rolling and roll-marking, but not for cold heading or tight-radius bending; hot working must stay below ~1180 °C and Pb makes hot forming risky.

Manufacturability

The process limits FabDigit applies to 11SMnPb37. Every 11SMnPb37 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
