What is 1112?
1112 is a classic resulfurized free-machining carbon steel (UNS G11120) from the AISI/SAE 11xx family, relying on manganese sulfide inclusions rather than alloying for its cutting behaviour. It is widely stocked for general screw-machine work, with default cold-drawn values of 470 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile, 10% elongation and 167 HB (85 HRB) at a machinability score of 88, supplied as CD, HR, annealed, normalised, stress-relieved and TGP bar. High sulfur and phosphorus make it a poor welding grade and formability is limited (score 30); 1018 is the usual alternative when joints must be welded. 1112 has a density of 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 1112 has a yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — stronger than 57% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1112
Is 1112 easy to machine?
Benchmark free-cutting steel — high speeds, short broken chips, excellent tool life and surface finish on automatic lathes; light feeds can smear the soft matrix, so keep chip load positive.
Can 1112 be welded?
Poor: high sulfur and phosphorus promote hot cracking and porosity — avoid structural welds; if unavoidable use low-hydrogen filler, low heat input and preheat, or switch to 1018.
Can 1112 be formed, bent or molded?
Only light cold bending/upsetting; MnS stringers make transverse ductility low and cause splitting on tight bends — hot form above 900 °C instead.
1112 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Cmax only | ≤ 0.13 | 0.1 |
| Mn | 0.7 – 1 | 0.85 |
| Pintentionally added for chip breaking | 0.07 – 0.12 | 0.09 |
| Sresulfurized; forms MnS inclusions | 0.16 – 0.23 | 0.2 |

What surface finishes work on 1112?
Not anodizable; protect with zinc or nickel plating, black oxide, phosphate + oil, or paint. Inclusions can leave micro-pits after polishing and cause plating pinholes, so pre-clean thoroughly.
