What is 1118?
1118 (UNS G11180) is a resulfurized free-machining carburizing steel that balances sulfur content for chip control with enough carbon and manganese to respond well to case hardening. It is widely stocked as hot-rolled, cold-drawn, cold-drawn stress-relieved, turned-ground-polished, annealed and normalized bar, with cold-drawn values of about 450 MPa yield, 525 MPa tensile, 15 % elongation and 149 HB (80 HRB). Machinability is rated 85 (about 90 % of 1212), but weldability is marginal and transverse ductility is limited by sulfide stringers. Use 1117 where a lower sulfur level is preferred, or 8620 for heavier-duty carburized gearing. 1118 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 1118 has a yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 525 MPa (76.1 ksi) — stronger than 52% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1118
Is 1118 easy to machine?
Excellent — 90 % of 1212; run high speeds with sulfurized or soluble oil, expect short broken chips and long tool life.
Can 1118 be welded?
Marginal — high sulfur promotes hot cracking and porosity; if unavoidable use low-hydrogen filler, preheat 100–150 °C and low heat input.
Can 1118 be formed, bent or molded?
Moderate cold formability in the annealed state; sulfide stringers cause poor transverse ductility, so avoid tight transverse bends and severe cold heading.

What surface finishes work on 1118?
Not anodizable; protect with zinc or nickel plating, black oxide, phosphate + oil, or paint. MnS inclusions limit mirror polishing and can pit in plating baths.
