What is 1132?
1132 is a medium-carbon resulfurized free-machining steel in the SAE/AISI 11xx family (UNS G11320), with higher manganese for improved strength and hardenability. It is specified for high-volume turned parts that need more strength than low-carbon free-cutting grades, and is stocked as cold-drawn and hot-rolled bar plus annealed, normalized, quenched-and-tempered (22–26 HRC and 28–32 HRC) and induction-hardened conditions. Cold-drawn bar gives roughly 530 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation and 183 HB, with a machinability rating of 78. The sulfur content makes it a poor welding steel and cold formability is limited (rating 30); 1141 or 1144 are the usual step up in strength. 1132 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 1132 has a yield strength of 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 69% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with 1132
Is 1132 easy to machine?
Excellent screw-machine steel (~75 % of 1212); run high speeds with sulfurized oils, MnS gives short chips and good finish on turned diameters.
Can 1132 be welded?
Poor — high S promotes hot cracking and porosity; if unavoidable use low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 150–250 °C and expect reduced joint ductility.
Can 1132 be formed, bent or molded?
Limited cold formability, especially transverse to rolling; bend generously or hot form at 900–1200 °C.

What surface finishes work on 1132?
Not anodizable; protect with oil, phosphate, black oxide, zinc or nickel plating — plate carefully as MnS pits can trap electrolyte.
