What is 11SMnPb30?
11SMnPb30 (1.0737, EN 10087) is a resulfurized and leaded free-cutting carbon steel, the European counterpart to AISI 12L14; lead globules together with MnS inclusions give it a machinability rating of 88. It is the default bar for high-volume turned parts on automatic and Swiss lathes, stocked hot-rolled, cold-rolled, cold-drawn, annealed, peeled and in special hardness. Strength is low (260 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 135 HB), it is not weldable, forms poorly and has no corrosion resistance. Where lead is not permitted, 11SMn30 is the direct substitute. 11SMnPb30 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 11SMnPb30 has a yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 92% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 11SMnPb30
Is 11SMnPb30 easy to machine?
Outstanding: high speeds with HSS or carbide, short broken chips, excellent surface and long tool life — the benchmark free-cutting steel for automatic lathes.
Can 11SMnPb30 be welded?
Not recommended — high sulphur and lead cause hot cracking and porosity; if unavoidable, use low-hydrogen filler, preheat and fume extraction for Pb.
Can 11SMnPb30 be formed, bent or molded?
Poor cold formability and bendability due to MnS/Pb inclusions; only light cold heading or staking in the annealed condition, hot forming above ~1150 °C with care.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to 11SMnPb30. Every 11SMnPb30 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
