What is 11SMn37?
11SMn37 (1.0736) is a European high-sulphur, high-manganese free-cutting (resulphurised) structural steel, the unleaded counterpart of 11SMnPb37 and the closest EN equivalent to AISI 1215. Its ~0.35 % S content forms MnS inclusions that break chips and lubricate the tool, giving outstanding productivity on automatic lathes and screw machines for high-volume, low-stress turned parts (bushings, fittings, shafts, fasteners). Limits: it is not intended for welding, heat treatment (very low C) or corrosive service, transverse ductility and impact toughness are poor, and surface protection (zinc plating, blackening) is normally required. 11SMn37 has a density of 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 11SMn37 has a yield strength of 280 MPa (40.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — weaker than 90% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with 11SMn37
Is 11SMn37 easy to machine?
Benchmark free-cutting steel: run high speeds with sharp positive-rake carbide or HSS, light feeds give short chips; expect ~30–40 % higher metal-removal rates than 1.0402/C22.
Can 11SMn37 be welded?
Not recommended — 0.32–0.42 % S causes hot cracking and porosity; if unavoidable use low-hydrogen consumables, preheat and accept reduced joint properties.
Can 11SMn37 be formed, bent or molded?
Only light cold forming (knurling, staking, small upsets); transverse bending and heavy heading crack along the MnS stringers — use annealed stock and generous radii.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to 11SMn37. Every 11SMn37 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
