Working with S43037 1/4H
Is S43037 easy to machine?
Machinability is slightly better than 304 but the chips still smear onto the tool: use sharp positive-rake tooling, high feed and plenty of emulsion coolant, and control depth of cut to limit the work-hardened layer and burr formation.
Can S43037 be welded?
GTAW, GMAW, laser and high-frequency welding all work, and the Ti/Nb stabilization means no post-weld anneal is needed in the as-welded condition. Use low heat input with 409Nb/439 or 308L/430LNb type filler, pure argon shielding, and avoid nitrogen-bearing gases that cause coarse-grain embrittlement of the weld.
Can S43037 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold bending, roll forming and stretch forming are good (high r-value), but allow for anisotropy and ridging/roping on drawn surfaces. Keep bend radius ≥1t and avoid heavy deformation followed by long high-temperature exposure, which coarsens the grain.
What surface finishes work on S43037?
2B and BA rolled finishes, mechanical polishing, electropolishing and passivation all apply. The grade cannot be anodized; use chemical coloring or PVD for decorative shades, and always passivate after pickling to restore the passive film.
