What is Usibor 1500?

Usibor 1500 is the aluminium-silicon coated (AS80) commercial form of 22MnB5 boron-manganese press-hardening steel, supplied as sheet and tailor-welded blanks. As delivered it is soft and formable (400 MPa yield, 600 MPa tensile, 15 % elongation, 180 HB); after austenitizing and die quenching it converts to full martensite near 480 HV, which is why it is the de-facto standard for automotive body-in-white safety structures. Limits are the need for a hot-stamping line, hardened parts that cannot be conventionally machined, coating ablation before laser welding, and only modest corrosion resistance. Uncoated 22MnB5 is the alternative where scale removal by blasting is acceptable. Usibor 1500 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,490°C (2,714 °F). Usibor 1500 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

What is Usibor 1500 used for?

  • A- and B-pillar reinforcements
  • Door impact beams
  • Bumper beams
  • Roof rails and side sills
  • Tunnel and floor cross members
  • Front and rear longitudinal rails
  • Battery enclosure structural frames

Advantages

  • Good corrosion resistance — 35/100, better than 97% of steel grades

Limitations

  • Hard to polish — 40/100, worse than 96% of steel grades
  • Poor heat conductor — 34 W/m·K (19.6 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 77% of steel grades

Corrosion ResistanceFair35/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryAl-Si coating gives good barrier protection against hot oxidation and scaling during austenitizing and modest atmospheric protection; it is not sacrificial like zinc, so cut edges and coating damage rust and painting/cataphoresis is mandatory. Poor resistance to acids, chlorides and de-icing salt when bare.

Working with Usibor 1500

Is Usibor 1500 easy to machine?

Blank and pierce in the as-delivered soft state; after press hardening use laser cutting or CBN/ceramic hard trimming — conventional drilling/milling of 480 HV martensite is impractical.

Can Usibor 1500 be welded?

Resistance spot welding is production-proven (higher current/longer weld time than uncoated steel); for laser welding of blanks the Al-Si layer must be ablated to avoid brittle Fe-Al intermetallics in the fusion zone; avoid arc welding on hardened parts (HAZ softening).

Can Usibor 1500 be formed, bent or molded?

Direct hot stamping: austenitize 900–950 °C for 3–6 min, transfer in <10 s, form and quench in cooled dies at >27 °C/s to full martensite; springback is minimal but cooling-rate control drives final strength.

Manufacturability

What surface finishes work on Usibor 1500?

Al-Si coating tolerates phosphating/e-coat with adapted pretreatment; shot blasting of coated parts is not needed, cut edges and welds must be sealed/painted since the coating is not sacrificial.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).
