What is TRIP1000?
TRIP1000 is a high-strength transformation-induced-plasticity sheet steel rated at 720 MPa yield, 1040 MPa tensile and 14 % elongation (about 32 HRC), retaining useful ductility for energy absorption at the 1000 MPa level. It is used for cold-stamped crash members and is supplied bare (CR, CR+BH) or zinc-coated as GI, GA, EG and ZM. Machinability is poor, hole-expansion and stretch-flange limits are low, springback and sidewall curl are large, and the spot-weld window is narrow. DP980 is the nearest alternative where edge stretch and weld robustness matter more than global elongation. TRIP1000 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). TRIP1000 has a yield strength of 720 MPa (104 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,040 MPa (151 ksi) — stronger than 82% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 14% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with TRIP1000
Is TRIP1000 easy to machine?
Poor machinability at ~1000 MPa: use coated carbide or PCBN, rigid setups and low feeds; trimming/piercing is preferred over milling, and punch clearances of 10–15 % of thickness plus sharp tools are needed to avoid burr-initiated edge cracks.
Can TRIP1000 be welded?
Resistance spot welding is standard but with a narrow current window — use pulsed schedules, longer hold times or post-weld tempering pulses to combat interfacial fracture; keep heat input low in laser/MAG welding since the softened HAZ and lost retained austenite reduce local strength, and use low-hydrogen practice.
Can TRIP1000 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold stamp with high blank-holder force and stiff, hardened tooling (Class D2/PM tool steels); the high n-value gives good stretch formability but hole-expansion and stretch-flange limits are low, springback and sidewall curl are large so compensate the die or use post-stretch/restrike.

What surface finishes work on TRIP1000?
Supplied bare (oiled) or zinc coated; phosphate + cathodic e-coat is the normal protection route. Avoid acid pickling and aggressive electroplating on formed parts to limit hydrogen-assisted delayed cracking, and watch liquid-metal embrittlement when welding Zn-coated variants.
