What is Creusabro 4000?

Creusabro 4000 is Industeel's dual-phase austenite–martensite wear plate with a nominal 400 HB (42 HRC) delivery hardness that work-hardens in service, so the working surface hardens under load. Engineers choose it over conventional 400 HB quenched-and-tempered plate for combined impact and abrasion, and for better fabrication: 1000 MPa yield, 1250 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation and 3–4×t cold bend radii, with service to 400 °C. No post-weld heat treatment may be used because it softens the plate, and cost is above standard NM400-class plate. Where only sliding abrasion matters, XAR 400 or Hardox 400 is cheaper. Creusabro 4000 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). Creusabro 4000 has a yield strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) — stronger than 92% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with Creusabro 4000

Is Creusabro 4000 easy to machine?

Machine with rigid setups and coated carbide or CBN at low feeds/speeds; drilling needs high thrust and coolant, and the material work-hardens locally, so avoid dwelling and prefer plasma/laser cutting plus grinding where possible.

Can Creusabro 4000 be welded?

Weldable with low-hydrogen MMA/MAG/FCAW consumables; carbon equivalent is moderate so no preheat is usually needed up to ~30 mm, above that preheat 100–150 °C, keep interpass ≤250 °C, no post-weld heat treatment (it would soften the plate).

Can Creusabro 4000 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bendable with bend radius about 3–4×t transverse to rolling direction (better ductility than conventional 400 HB plate); hot forming and full re-quench are not recommended as the dual-phase structure would be lost.

What surface finishes work on Creusabro 4000?

Descale/blast then shop primer or epoxy paint; no anodizing (ferrous). Flame/plasma cut edges should be ground before welding or bending to remove the hardened cut zone.
