What is SPFC980?

SPFC980 is a cold-rolled ultra-high-strength JIS dual-phase sheet in the DP980 class, with 690 MPa yield, 1040 MPa tensile, 10 % elongation, about 31 HRC and a 200 °C maximum service temperature. It is used for crash-critical body-in-white components in Japanese OEM designs where gauge and mass must be cut; Y, BH and GA, GI or EG coated conditions are on file. Formability score is 28, spot-weld windows are narrow with LME risk on zinc coatings, and bare sheet needs coating. Hot-stamped PHS is the alternative when geometry exceeds cold-forming limits. SPFC980 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). SPFC980 has a yield strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,040 MPa (151 ksi) — stronger than 80% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with SPFC980

Is SPFC980 easy to machine?

Trim, pierce and drill with carbide or coated HSS at reduced speed and generous clearance; hardened microstructure wears tooling fast and edges must be kept smooth to avoid edge cracking.

Can SPFC980 be welded?

Resistance spot welding is standard but needs pulsed/short-hold schedules, higher electrode force and tight LME control on Zn-coated versions; laser welding works with tempering passes, arc welding softens the HAZ so joint strength should not be assumed at base-metal level.

Can SPFC980 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold stamp with high-tonnage presses, springback compensation in the die, 8–12 % usable strain, generous bend radii (≥3–4 t) and de-burred/laser-trimmed edges to avoid delayed and edge cracking; roll forming is a good alternative for long sections.

What surface finishes work on SPFC980?

Zinc-phosphate + cathodic e-coat for bare material, or specify GA/GI/EG coated coil; avoid acid pickling and standard electroplating without post-bake because of hydrogen embrittlement risk.

SPFC980 — frequently asked

What is SPFC980 used for?

SPFC980 is typically used for B-pillar reinforcements, sills and bumper beams. In short: crash-critical 1040 MPa class; cold-formed alternative to PHS; only 10 % elongation.

What is the yield strength of SPFC980?

SPFC980 has a typical yield strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,040 MPa (151 ksi) — stronger than 80% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is SPFC980 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 91% of steel grades). Trim, pierce and drill with carbide or coated HSS at reduced speed and generous clearance; hardened microstructure wears tooling fast and edges must be kept smooth to avoid edge cracking.

Can SPFC980 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (60/100). Resistance spot welding is standard but needs pulsed/short-hold schedules, higher electrode force and tight LME control on Zn-coated versions; laser welding works with tempering passes, arc welding softens the HAZ so joint strength should not be assumed at base-metal level.

What surface finishes work on SPFC980?

What is the maximum service temperature of SPFC980?

SPFC980 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between SPFC980-Y and SPFC980-BH?

Y is the default condition — standard bare cold-rolled DP980 coil/blank for interior crash-critical reinforcements that are e-coated after assembly. BH: reference condition for in-service part strength: yield rises from bake hardening and work hardening, ductility drops. Yield strength is 690 MPa in Y versus 780 MPa in BH.
