What is DP600?

DP600 (SPFC590, HCT600X) is the workhorse mid-strength dual-phase sheet steel, balancing stretch formability against crash energy absorption. Typical properties are 380 MPa yield, 640 MPa tensile, 24 % elongation and about 190 HB, with coil supplied CR, HR, 2PCT+BH and in GI, GA or EG coatings for wheel discs, rails and seat structures. Press loads and springback are 2–3× those of drawing-quality steel, the spot-weld current window is narrower and some HAZ softening is unavoidable; DP450 is the choice where formability dominates over strength. DP600 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). DP600 has a yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) — weaker than 68% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with DP600

Is DP600 easy to machine?

Drilling/trimming is harder than mild steel — use coated carbide, reduced feed per tooth, and expect fast punch wear; laser or waterjet is preferred for prototype blanks.

Can DP600 be welded?

Good for RSW/laser/MAG but use a narrowed spot-weld current window, higher electrode force and stepper control; HAZ softening and a small strength/ductility loss are normal, and zinc coatings need extra current and electrode dressing.

Can DP600 be formed, bent or molded?

Strong work hardening (n ≈ 0.17–0.21) gives good stretch formability but 2–3× the springback and press load of DLC steel — compensate tool geometry, use tighter blank-holder control and avoid sharp bends below about 2t.

What surface finishes work on DP600?

Bare CR needs phosphate + e-coat or paint immediately; GI/GA blanks take conventional automotive pretreatment and e-coat well; avoid hot-dip re-galvanizing of formed parts because bath temperature tempers the martensite.

DP600 — frequently asked

What is DP600 used for?

DP600 is typically used for wheel discs, cross members, seat rails and brackets. In short: workhorse dual-phase grade; balanced strength and formability; good crash energy absorption.

What is the yield strength of DP600?

DP600 has a typical yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) — weaker than 68% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is DP600 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (45/100, worse than 65% of steel grades). Drilling/trimming is harder than mild steel — use coated carbide, reduced feed per tooth, and expect fast punch wear; laser or waterjet is preferred for prototype blanks.

Can DP600 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (72/100). Good for RSW/laser/MAG but use a narrowed spot-weld current window, higher electrode force and stepper control; HAZ softening and a small strength/ductility loss are normal, and zinc coatings need extra current and electrode dressing.

What is the maximum service temperature of DP600?

DP600 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between DP600-CR and DP600-HR?

CR is the default condition — baseline uncoated cold-rolled coil/blank for parts that are painted or e-coated after forming. HR: thicker gauges (roughly 2–6 mm) for wheel discs/rims, chassis arms and rails where cold-rolled thickness is insufficient. Yield strength is 380 MPa in CR versus 380 MPa in HR.
