What is DP1180?

DP1180 (HCT1180X) is an ultra-high-strength dual-phase sheet steel for crash-critical body-in-white members, with about 950 MPa yield, 1230 MPa tensile, 7 % elongation and 38 HRC. It is supplied cold-rolled, in BH temper and with +Z, +ZF or +ZE zinc coatings, and is selected where high strength must be combined with moderate cold formability. Bend radii of 3–4 t, limited hole expansion and high press tonnage constrain part geometry, and zinc-coated sheet is sensitive to liquid metal embrittlement during spot welding; press-hardened 22MnB5 is the alternative when the geometry exceeds cold-stamping limits. DP1180 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). DP1180 has a yield strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,230 MPa (178 ksi) — stronger than 91% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 7% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with DP1180

Is DP1180 easy to machine?

Rarely machined — blank by laser or carbide/PM tooling with large clearance; expect fast punch wear and prefer laser or waterjet cutting of hardened edges.

Can DP1180 be welded?

Good resistance spot weldability with in-process pulsing/post-heat to improve nugget toughness; on Zn-coated grades control heat input and electrode force to avoid liquid metal embrittlement, and avoid oxy-fuel/soft filler arc welds that soften the HAZ.

Can DP1180 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold stamping only with high-tonnage presses, generous bend radii (≥3–4 t), stretch-flange-safe trimmed edges (laser trim preferred) and springback compensation in the die face; hole expansion is limited.

DP1180 — frequently asked

What is DP1180 used for?

DP1180 is typically used for door rings, B-pillar reinforcements, bumper beams and sill reinforcements. In short: highest-strength cold-formable DP; crash-critical BIW grade; only 7 % elongation.

What is the yield strength of DP1180?

DP1180 has a typical yield strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,230 MPa (178 ksi) — stronger than 91% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is DP1180 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 91% of steel grades). Rarely machined — blank by laser or carbide/PM tooling with large clearance; expect fast punch wear and prefer laser or waterjet cutting of hardened edges.

Can DP1180 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). Good resistance spot weldability with in-process pulsing/post-heat to improve nugget toughness; on Zn-coated grades control heat input and electrode force to avoid liquid metal embrittlement, and avoid oxy-fuel/soft filler arc welds that soften the HAZ.

What is the maximum service temperature of DP1180?

DP1180 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between DP1180-CR and DP1180-BH?

CR is the default condition — standard uncoated cold-rolled DP1180 coil/blank for interior structural parts that are e-coated after assembly. BH: use for as-installed part strength in crash simulation: forming plus paint-bake raises the yield strength appreciably. Yield strength is 950 MPa in CR versus 1,080 MPa in BH.
