What is Ductibor 500?

Ductibor 500 is a low-carbon-equivalent press-hardening steel (PHS) developed as the ductile partner in laser-welded tailored blanks with Usibor grades. In the press-hardened condition it gives about 420 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile and 17 % elongation at 185 HB (90 HRB), so it forms a controlled, energy-absorbing crush zone in a hot-stamped part. It is supplied AlSi-coated as as-delivered blank stock (AD-AS) and in press-hardened conditions (PH, PH-LWTB). It is not an intrusion-resistance grade; use Usibor-class steel where high strength is needed, and note the AlSi layer is a barrier coating with no galvanic protection. Ductibor 500 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,465°C (2,669 °F). Ductibor 500 has a yield strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 53% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 17% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Chemical Resistance SummaryBare steel rusts readily; the Al-Si coating gives good high-temperature oxidation/scale protection during hot stamping and moderate barrier corrosion protection in service, but no sacrificial (cathodic) protection at cut edges — cataphoretic e-coat and sealer are mandatory in body applications.

Working with Ductibor 500

Is Ductibor 500 easy to machine?

Sheet product — trimming, piercing and hole-making are done by laser or hard-tool trim after press hardening; carbide/PCD tooling and coating dust extraction are recommended.

Can Ductibor 500 be welded?

Low carbon equivalent gives good resistance spot welding and laser welding, including dissimilar joints to Usibor; remove or manage the AlSi layer in laser butt welds (ablation) to avoid Al enrichment and soft ferrite in the fusion zone.

Can Ductibor 500 be formed, bent or molded?

Blank cold and laser-weld in the as-delivered condition, then austenitise ~900–930 °C and hot stamp/die quench; the grade is intentionally sluggish-hardening so cooling-rate scatter has little effect on final strength.

What surface finishes work on Ductibor 500?

AlSi coating survives stamping and provides scale-free surface; parts go through standard phosphate + cataphoretic e-coat, with sealer at cut edges since AlSi is barrier-only (no galvanic protection).

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

How much does Ductibor 500 cost?

Ductibor 500 is a budget-cost steel ($), cheaper than about 90% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
