What is XAR 400?

XAR 400 (NM400 to GB/T 24186) is a quenched-and-tempered abrasion-resistant plate at roughly 360–440 HB (nominal 400 HB, 43 HRC), with 1000 MPa yield, 1250 MPa tensile and 10 % elongation. It is the workhorse wear grade for parts that must still be cut, bent and welded, and is stocked as plate for buckets, chutes, hoppers and truck bodies. Cold bend radii run about 3–4× thickness, welding needs low-hydrogen consumables, and service is limited to 250 °C since heat above the tempering temperature removes the hardness. It competes directly with Hardox 400; step up to XAR 500 for more severe abrasion. XAR 400 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). XAR 400 has a yield strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) — stronger than 92% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with XAR 400

Is XAR 400 easy to machine?

Treat as 400 HB Q&T steel: rigid setup, negative-rake coated carbide or CBN, low feed/high stability; drilling needs cobalt or carbide with rigid clamping — waterjet or plasma is usually cheaper than milling.

Can XAR 400 be welded?

Weldable with low-hydrogen consumables (soft 500–700 MPa filler is normal); preheat 100–150 °C for thicknesses above ~20 mm and limit interpass to ~225 °C to avoid HAZ cracking and softening.

Can XAR 400 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold-bendable with min inner radius about 3×t transverse to rolling direction (4×t longitudinal), punch nose aligned across the rolling direction; hot forming is not permitted because it destroys the quench.

What surface finishes work on XAR 400?

Supplied shot-blasted or as-rolled; must be primed/painted for outdoor storage, flame-cut edges should be ground to remove hard/notched zones, and hard-facing overlay can be applied at critical wear spots.
