Working with E6011-SR

Is E6011 easy to machine?

Deposit machines like mild steel but slag inclusions and hard HAZ zones dull tooling — grind the crown flat before finish cuts.

Can E6011 be welded?

Run AC or DCEP with a tight, whipped arc; deep penetration handles rust, paint and galvanizing residue, but keep hydrogen-sensitive or thick, restrained joints for low-hydrogen E7018 instead.

Can E6011 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product — deposits can be peened or lightly dressed, but avoid severe cold bending across as-welded beads.

What surface finishes work on E6011?

Heavy spatter and coarse ripple require grinding/wire-brushing; then prime and paint or galvanize since bare deposit rusts quickly.

What is the yield strength of E6011-SR?

E6011-SR has a typical yield strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 455 MPa (66 ksi) — weaker than 72% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is E6011-SR easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (60/100, better than 83% of steel grades). Deposit machines like mild steel but slag inclusions and hard HAZ zones dull tooling — grind the crown flat before finish cuts.

Can E6011-SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Run AC or DCEP with a tight, whipped arc; deep penetration handles rust, paint and galvanizing residue, but keep hydrogen-sensitive or thick, restrained joints for low-hydrogen E7018 instead.

What surface finishes work on E6011-SR?

Heavy spatter and coarse ripple require grinding/wire-brushing; then prime and paint or galvanize since bare deposit rusts quickly.

Can E6011-SR be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product — deposits can be peened or lightly dressed, but avoid severe cold bending across as-welded beads.

What is the maximum service temperature of E6011-SR?

E6011-SR is rated for continuous use to about 425°C (797 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between E6011-AW and E6011-SR?

AW is the default condition — standard supplied/qualified condition: properties of the undiluted deposit in the as-welded state, no post-weld heat treatment. SR: choose when code work (e.g. ASME/B31 piping) requires PWHT; strength drops slightly and ductility/toughness improve. Yield strength is 400 MPa in AW versus 360 MPa in SR.
