What is 60Si2MnA?

60Si2MnA is the higher-quality (tighter P and S) version of the silicon–manganese spring steel of GB/T 1222, broadly equivalent to AISI 9260 and close to JIS SUP6. About 1.7 % Si raises the yield ratio and elastic limit, so after oil quenching and medium-temperature tempering it reaches 1600–1800 MPa with good relaxation resistance — the default for leaf springs, coil springs, spring washers and clamp rings in bar, flat, strip and oil-tempered wire. Corrosion resistance is poor, so parts must be painted, peened or coated; surface decarburization and graphitization occur readily in hot work, impact toughness at full hardness is modest, and load-bearing capacity drops above about 250 °C (200 °C practical service ceiling). 60Si2MnA has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). 60Si2MnA has a yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 71% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 14% and the elastic modulus is 206 GPa (29.9 Msi).

  • Leaf springs
  • Industrial coil springs

  • Low electrical conductivity — 6 % IACS, worse than 78% of steel grades
  • Difficult to weld — 25/100, worse than 77% of steel grades
  • Limited ductility — 14%, worse than 75% of steel grades

Working with 60Si2MnA

Is 60Si2MnA easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed/spheroidized state with carbide tooling and rigid setups; at 45–50 HRC only grinding, EDM or hard turning with CBN is practical.

Can 60Si2MnA be welded?

Essentially not recommended for spring service — high C plus 1.8 % Si makes it crack-sensitive; if unavoidable use low-hydrogen consumables, 250–350 °C preheat and immediate re-hardening or PWHT.

Can 60Si2MnA be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form or blank only when annealed; leaf springs are best formed hot (900–1000 °C) or formed and then austenitized at 860–880 °C, oil quenched and tempered 400–520 °C, watching for surface decarburization and graphitization.

Manufacturability
