What is Cronidur 30?

Cronidur 30 (X30CrMoN15-1, S42086) is a nitrogen-alloyed 15% chromium martensitic stainless bearing steel in which nitrogen replaces part of the carbon to refine the carbonitride structure. Hardened, deep-frozen and tempered it reaches about 59 HRC with 1850 MPa yield and 2100 MPa tensile strength, giving rolling contact fatigue life and corrosion resistance (score 58) above 440C; it is supplied as bar and forged rings for aerospace and marine bearings. Elongation is only 4%, service temperature is limited to about 250 °C, machinability is low (score 12) and cost and availability are restrictive. 440C or M50NiL are the usual alternatives. Cronidur 30 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 95% of steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). Cronidur 30 has a yield strength of 1,850 MPa (268 ksi) and a tensile strength of 2,100 MPa (305 ksi) — stronger than 99% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 4% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with Cronidur 30

Is Cronidur 30 easy to machine?

Machine rings and shafts in the annealed state with rigid setups and coated carbide at low speed; after hardening only grinding, honing and CBN hard turning are practical.

Can Cronidur 30 be welded?

Not recommended — high C+N martensite is highly crack sensitive; if unavoidable use electron-beam/laser with preheat and immediate re-heat-treatment.

Can Cronidur 30 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1100–850 °C with slow controlled cooling and immediate soft anneal; no cold forming in hardened condition.
