What is 60Si2Mn?
60Si2Mn is a silicon-manganese spring steel (equivalent to 9260 and SUP7) supplied hot-rolled, normalized, annealed, cold-drawn or hardened and tempered. The high silicon content raises the elastic limit, which is why it is the standard bar and strip material for automotive leaf and coil springs; the default condition on file lists 480 MPa yield, 800 MPa tensile, 15 % elongation and 255 HB. Limits are a maximum service temperature of about 200 °C, poor machinability (score 45) and poor weldability from the ~0.6 % C level. 50CrVA or 60Si2CrVA are used where higher relaxation resistance is needed. 60Si2Mn has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 93% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 60Si2Mn has a yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 59% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 206 GPa (29.9 Msi).
What is 60Si2Mn used for?
- Automotive leaf springs
- Helical coil springs
- Railcar and trailer suspension springs
- Torsion bars

- Agricultural tine and harrow springs
Limitations
- Limited service temperature — 200°C (392 °F), worse than 93% of steel grades
- Difficult to weld — 20/100, worse than 84% of steel grades

Working with 60Si2Mn
Is 60Si2Mn easy to machine?
Machine only in the annealed (≤302 HBW) state — the high silicon is abrasive, so use rigid setups, coated carbide and moderate speeds; grind after hardening for final size.
Can 60Si2Mn be welded?
Poor: 0.6 %C gives hard, crack-sensitive HAZ — avoid welding on springs; if unavoidable use 200–350 °C preheat, low-hydrogen filler and immediate post-weld temper.
Can 60Si2Mn be formed, bent or molded?
Cold form or coil in the annealed/cold-drawn state with generous bend radii, or hot form at 900–1050 °C; then oil quench 860–880 °C and temper 400–480 °C to the required hardness.
