What is FDSiCrV?
FDSiCrV is a silicon-chromium-vanadium alloyed, oil-tempered spring steel wire and the highest-alloyed variant of the FD wire series, intended for the most demanding high-stress springs. It is supplied in diameter-banded OT conditions plus stress-relieved, shot-peened, phosphated and zinc-coated forms, with default values of 1720 MPa yield, 1930 MPa tensile, 6 % elongation, about 53 HRC and service to 250 °C. Cost and lead time are the highest in the family, it cannot carry welded joints in the tempered state, and it has no inherent corrosion resistance. FDSiCr (A401) covers the same applications at lower design stress. FDSiCrV has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). FDSiCrV has a yield strength of 1,720 MPa (249 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,930 MPa (280 ksi) — stronger than 99% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with FDSiCrV
Is FDSiCrV easy to machine?
Delivered at ~50-55 HRC — do not turn or drill; finish springs by grinding ends and tumbling, or machine features before any thermal work.
Can FDSiCrV be welded?
Effectively unweldable for load-carrying joints: high carbon plus Si-Cr-V gives hard, crack-prone HAZ and destroys the tempered structure; use mechanical hooks or captive ends instead.
Can FDSiCrV be formed, bent or molded?
Cold-coil on CNC formers with generous mandrel ratio (D/d ≥ 4) and good lubricity (phosphated wire); always stress relieve 380–420 °C for 20–30 min after coiling, then optionally hot-set and shot peen.

FDSiCrV — frequently asked
What is FDSiCrV used for?
FDSiCrV is typically used for high-performance valve springs, critical fatigue-loaded springs and high-temperature service springs. In short: highest-strength FD spring wire; maximum design-stress springs; si-Cr-V alloyed, oil-tempered.
What is the yield strength of FDSiCrV?
FDSiCrV has a typical yield strength of 1,720 MPa (249 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,930 MPa (280 ksi) — stronger than 99% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.
Is FDSiCrV easy to machine?
