What is Nimonic 90?

Nimonic 90 is a precipitation-hardenable Ni-Cr-Co alloy (UNS N07090, 2.4632, NiCr20Co18Ti) strengthened by Ti/Al gamma-prime and supplied as bar, forgings, sheet, wire and fasteners. In the solution-treated and aged condition it gives 810 MPa yield, 1240 MPa tensile, 27% elongation and 330 HB (35 HRC), holding strength and creep resistance to about 920 °C. Machinability (14), weldability (25) and formability (20) ratings are all low, so forming and welding are done in the softened or solution-treated condition and the part is re-aged afterwards. Nimonic 80A is the cobalt-free alternative at lower strength. Nimonic 90 has a density of 8.19 g/cm³ (0.296 lb/in³), lighter than 68% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,310°C (2,390 °F). Nimonic 90 has a yield strength of 810 MPa (117 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,240 MPa (180 ksi) — stronger than 84% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 213 GPa (30.9 Msi).

Working with Nimonic 90

Is Nimonic 90 easy to machine?

Machine preferably in the solution-treated condition with rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, low speeds (15–25 m/min carbide), heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and glazing.

Can Nimonic 90 be welded?

GTAW/EB weld in the solution-treated state using matching or Ni-Cr filler, then re-solution and age; welding aged material risks γ′ strain-age cracking in the HAZ.

Can Nimonic 90 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work at 1050–1180 °C with frequent reheats; cold forming only from the softened condition with high forces and interstage anneals.

Nimonic 90 is typically used for turbine blades, turbine discs, exhaust valves and high-temperature springs and fasteners. In short: classic gas-turbine Nimonic; 920 °C creep strength; gamma-prime hardened Ni-Cr-Co.

What is the yield strength of Nimonic 90?

Nimonic 90 has a typical yield strength of 810 MPa (117 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,240 MPa (180 ksi) — stronger than 84% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is Nimonic 90 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (14/100, worse than 81% of nickel alloy grades). Machine preferably in the solution-treated condition with rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, low speeds (15–25 m/min carbide), heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and glazing.

Can Nimonic 90 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). GTAW/EB weld in the solution-treated state using matching or Ni-Cr filler, then re-solution and age; welding aged material risks γ′ strain-age cracking in the HAZ.
