What is BNi-10?
BNi-10 (UNS N99622) is a nickel-base brazing filler with tungsten and molybdenum additions that raise high-temperature strength in the joint. Density is 9.1 g/cm³ and the alloy melts at 971 °C; it is supplied only as powder, paste, tape or pre-sintered preform because the high B, Si and C content prevents wire drawing or rolling. Engineers use it for wide-gap brazing and structural repair of turbine hardware, brazed at 1149–1204 °C in high vacuum or dry hydrogen. The boride-hardened deposit is effectively unmachinable (machinability score 5) and cannot be fusion welded; BNi-11 is the closest wide-gap alternative. BNi-10 has a density of 9.1 g/cm³ (0.329 lb/in³), heavier than 94% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 971°C (1,780 °F). BNi-10 has a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi), weaker than 77% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 1% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).
What is BNi-10 used for?
- wide-gap turbine component brazing
- superalloy repair
- high-temperature structural joints
Advantages
- Conducts heat well — 20 W/m·K (11.6 BTU/hr·ft·°F), better than 87% of nickel alloy grades
Limitations
- Difficult to machine — 5/100, worse than 99% of nickel alloy grades
- Limited ductility — 1%, worse than 98% of nickel alloy grades
- Difficult to weld — 10/100, worse than 94% of nickel alloy grades
- High embodied carbon — 16 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 93% of nickel alloy grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 55/100, worse than 92% of nickel alloy grades

Working with BNi-10
Is BNi-10 easy to machine?
Solidified BNi-10 is boride-hardened and effectively unmachinable by turning/milling — dress fillets by grinding, EDM or belt finishing.
Can BNi-10 be welded?
Not a weldable structural alloy; do not fusion weld the braze deposit (hot cracking) — remachine and re-braze instead.
Can BNi-10 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied only as powder, paste, tape or pre-sintered preform because the high B/Si/C content makes wire drawing or rolling impossible.
