What is BNi-1a?

BNi-1a (UNS N99610) is a lower-carbon version of the high-chromium Ni-Cr-B-Si brazing filler, with a melting point of 977 °C and a density of 7.9 g/cm³. The reduced carbon gives slightly better ductility while retaining boride hardening at about 45 HRC, and brazed joints serve to 980 °C. It is supplied as powder, paste, tape and rapidly solidified amorphous foil, so preplaced foil preforms are practical for repeat production. The fillet remains brittle and grind- or EDM-only; use BNi-2 where flow and gap filling matter more than joint hardness. BNi-1a has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), lighter than 92% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 977°C (1,791 °F). BNi-1a has a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi), weaker than 89% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 0.5% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with BNi-1a

Is BNi-1a easy to machine?

The solidified fillet is boride-hardened to ~45 HRC and is realistically grind- or EDM-only; design joints so no post-braze cutting crosses the braze line.

Can BNi-1a be welded?

Not a fusion-welding consumable — re-melting or welding over a BNi-1a joint readily produces hot cracks; repair by re-brazing instead.

Can BNi-1a be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as powder, paste, tape or amorphous foil; only the rapidly solidified foil can be cut and formed, the bulk alloy is brittle.

What surface finishes work on BNi-1a?

Braze fillets take a bright finish by grinding and lapping; avoid pickling in strong acids which preferentially attack boride phases, and keep faying surfaces oxide-free before brazing.
