What is ERNiCrFe-7A?

ERNiCrFe-7A is a modified Alloy 52 filler wire (UNS N06054) with tighter Nb control for improved hot-crack resistance in nuclear dissimilar-metal weld overlays and buttering. Engineers select it over ERNiCrFe-7 when overlay and buttering passes on nozzles and vessel components must resist hot cracking; it is supplied as cold-drawn wire and strip for GTAW, pulsed GMAW and hot-wire processes. As-welded deposits give about 400 MPa yield, 655 MPa tensile, 40% elongation and 195 HB, with service to 650 °C and a corrosion rating of 88. Machinability is low (score 25) and dilution and interpass control remain tight, as with the base Alloy 52 chemistry. ERNiCrFe-7A has a density of 8.25 g/cm³ (0.298 lb/in³), lighter than 58% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,355°C (2,471 °F). ERNiCrFe-7A has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — stronger than 56% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

  • dissimilar metal weld overlays
  • PWR primary system repairs

Working with ERNiCrFe-7A

Is ERNiCrFe-7A easy to machine?

Machine weld overlays with sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed/heavy feed and flood coolant — the deposit work-hardens rapidly and is gummy like Alloy 690.

Can ERNiCrFe-7A be welded?

Use GTAW (or pulsed GMAW/hot-wire) with low heat input, interpass ≤150 °C, minimal weaving and tight dilution control; buff/grind between passes and keep base-metal S+P low to avoid ductility-dip and hot cracking.

Can ERNiCrFe-7A be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as cold-drawn wire or strip; the alloy cold-forms like Alloy 690 with high forming loads and requires intermediate anneals at ~1030–1080 °C.
