What is N07776?

N07776 is a wrought, precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium-iron superalloy (UNS N07776) in the same family as 718 and Waspaloy, used where strength must be retained at temperature. Aged material gives 1010 MPa yield, 1300 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and 340 HB (36 HRC) with service to about 650 °C, and is available solution-annealed, solution-treated-and-aged, hot-finished-and-aged, and in cold-worked-plus-aged strength levels (CW+A-120/140/150). Limits are poor machinability (score 15), moderate weldability (40) and low formability (25); fully aged stock risks strain-age cracking, so machine, form and weld in the solution-annealed condition. Alloy 718 is the nearest widely stocked substitute. N07776 has a density of 8.3 g/cm³ (0.3 lb/in³), lighter than 52% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,265°C (2,309 °F). N07776 has a yield strength of 1,010 MPa (146 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,300 MPa (189 ksi) — stronger than 96% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 204 GPa (29.6 Msi).

Working with N07776

Is N07776 easy to machine?

Machine in the solution-annealed state where possible; use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tools, low speed/heavy feed, flood high-pressure coolant, and avoid dwelling to prevent severe work hardening.

Can N07776 be welded?

GTAW/EBW in the solution-annealed condition with matching or Ni-Cr-Mo filler, low heat input and interpass control, then re-solution and age; welding fully aged material risks strain-age and HAZ liquation cracking.

Can N07776 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work in the ~1000–1150 °C range with adequate finishing strain; cold forming only in the annealed temper with high tooling loads, generous radii and interstage anneals.

N07776 — frequently asked

What is N07776 used for?

N07776 is typically used for turbine discs, aerospace structural parts and high-temperature fasteners. In short: aged strength to 1300 MPa; hot strength to 650 °C; hard to machine, weld annealed.

What is the yield strength of N07776?

N07776 has a typical yield strength of 1,010 MPa (146 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,300 MPa (189 ksi) — stronger than 96% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is N07776 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (15/100, worse than 76% of nickel alloy grades). Machine in the solution-annealed state where possible; use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tools, low speed/heavy feed, flood high-pressure coolant, and avoid dwelling to prevent severe work hardening.

Can N07776 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (40/100). GTAW/EBW in the solution-annealed condition with matching or Ni-Cr-Mo filler, low heat input and interpass control, then re-solution and age; welding fully aged material risks strain-age and HAZ liquation cracking.

What surface finishes work on N07776?

Not anodizable — pickle/passivate or electropolish for corrosion service; shot peening improves fatigue and SCC life, and electroless Ni or PVD coatings can be used for galling control.

Can N07776 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work in the ~1000–1150 °C range with adequate finishing strain; cold forming only in the annealed temper with high tooling loads, generous radii and interstage anneals.

What is the maximum service temperature of N07776?

N07776 is rated for continuous use to about 650°C (1,202 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between N07776-STA and N07776-SA?

STA is the default condition — standard delivered condition for high-strength turbine, fastener and downhole components. SA: pick for forming, machining of complex shapes and welding before final ageing. Yield strength is 1,010 MPa in STA versus 420 MPa in SA.

How much does N07776 cost?

N07776 is a high-cost nickel alloy ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
