What is BNi-1?

BNi-1 is a high-chromium Ni-Cr-B-Si brazing filler (UNS N99600, also sold as Nicrobraz 150) with high carbon and boron content, supplied as powder, paste, tape or sintered preform. It is chosen for hard, erosion- and corrosion-resistant joints on stainless steels and nickel alloys brazed in vacuum or dry hydrogen at 1066–1204 °C with 0.025–0.075 mm clearances. Joints run about 52 HRC and 550 MPa tensile with only 1 % elongation, and serve to 900 °C. The deposit is brittle, effectively unmachinable (machinability score 6) and can erode thin sections by boron diffusion; BNi-1a is the lower-carbon, slightly more ductile option. BNi-1 has a density of 7.89 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), lighter than 94% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 977°C (1,791 °F). BNi-1 has a yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — stronger than 73% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 1% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

What is BNi-1 used for?

  • Stellite/carbide overlay joints

  • vacuum furnace brazing of stainless steel

Advantages

  • Conducts heat well — 16 W/m·K (9.24 BTU/hr·ft·°F), better than 82% of nickel alloy grades

Working with BNi-1

Is BNi-1 easy to machine?

Solidified filler is boride-hardened and effectively unmachinable — remove excess by grinding, EDM or abrasive blasting, never by turning or drilling.

Can BNi-1 be welded?

Do not fusion weld the joint; boron promotes hot cracking — repair by cleaning and re-brazing, and keep filler away from areas to be later welded.

Can BNi-1 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as powder, paste, tape or sintered preform; free-flowing at 1066–1204 °C in vacuum or dry hydrogen with clearances of 0.025–0.075 mm, and it will erode thin sections by boron diffusion if held too long.

What surface finishes work on BNi-1?

Brazed surfaces can be passivated, aluminized or coated with the parent alloy; plating adheres poorly to boride-rich fillets and polishing gives slight phase relief.
