What is Inconel 693?

Inconel 693 (UNS N06693) is a Ni-Cr-Al alloy in which the aluminium addition forms a protective alumina scale, giving resistance to metal dusting and high-temperature oxidation in reformer, syngas and incinerator atmospheres. It is supplied as tube, plate and bar in annealed, hot-finished, cold-drawn, aged and as-welded conditions, with 400 MPa yield, 790 MPa tensile, 45 % elongation, 195 HB and service to 1100 °C. Machinability is poor (16) and weldability only moderate (55) because Al and Nb raise hot-cracking risk. Alloy 601 is the usual fallback when metal dusting is not the controlling degradation mechanism. Inconel 693 has a density of 7.63 g/cm³ (0.276 lb/in³), lighter than 98% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,343°C (2,449 °F). Inconel 693 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 790 MPa (115 ksi) — stronger than 56% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with Inconel 693

Is Inconel 693 easy to machine?

Machine like alloy 601/625: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide or ceramic, low speed with heavy positive feed, flood coolant, and never dwell — the alloy work-hardens rapidly.

Can Inconel 693 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW with matching Filler Metal 693; keep heat input and interpass temperature low, clean Al-oxide film before welding, and avoid high-restraint joints because Al+Nb raise hot-cracking risk.

Can Inconel 693 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work 950–1200 °C then anneal; cold forming is possible but requires ~50% more force than 300-series stainless with intermediate anneals at ~1080 °C.

What surface finishes work on Inconel 693?

Pickle/passivate or grit-blast + descale after hot work; no anodizing — the in-service alumina/chromia scale is the protective layer, so avoid Cu- or S-bearing marking compounds.
