Working with 430FSe-CD

Is 430FSe easy to machine?

Excellent free-cutting behavior at ~70 % of AISI 1212; run sharp positive-rake carbide, high feed and generous sulfochlorinated oil to keep chips breaking and avoid smearing selenides.

Can 430FSe be welded?

Not recommended — selenium and the ferritic coarse-grain HAZ cause porosity, hot cracking and loss of ductility; use mechanical joints or braze instead.

Can 430FSe be formed, bent or molded?

Only light cold heading, knurling or thread rolling in the annealed condition; bends are prone to splitting along selenide stringers, so form transverse to the drawing direction cautiously and preheat 150–250 °C for severe work.

What surface finishes work on 430FSe?

Takes a bright mechanical or electro-polish better than sulfur-bearing 430F; passivate in nitric acid after machining and Ni/Cr plate where chloride exposure is expected.

430FSe-CD — frequently asked

What is 430FSe-CD used for?

430FSe-CD is typically used for decorative fasteners, precision turned parts and valve components. In short: best-machining ferritic stainless; polishes better than 430F; not intended for welding.

What is the yield strength of 430FSe-CD?

430FSe-CD has a typical yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — stronger than 83% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is 430FSe-CD easy to machine?

Yes — machinability is rated very good (70/100, better than 98% of stainless steel grades). Excellent free-cutting behavior at ~70 % of AISI 1212; run sharp positive-rake carbide, high feed and generous sulfochlorinated oil to keep chips breaking and avoid smearing selenides.

Can 430FSe-CD be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (18/100). Not recommended — selenium and the ferritic coarse-grain HAZ cause porosity, hot cracking and loss of ductility; use mechanical joints or braze instead.

What surface finishes work on 430FSe-CD?

Takes a bright mechanical or electro-polish better than sulfur-bearing 430F; passivate in nitric acid after machining and Ni/Cr plate where chloride exposure is expected.

Can 430FSe-CD be formed, bent or molded?

Only light cold heading, knurling or thread rolling in the annealed condition; bends are prone to splitting along selenide stringers, so form transverse to the drawing direction cautiously and preheat 150–250 °C for severe work.

What is the maximum service temperature of 430FSe-CD?

430FSe-CD is rated for continuous use to about 700°C (1,292 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 430FSe-A and 430FSe-CD?

A is the default condition — standard stocked condition for automatic-lathe turned parts needing best machinability and later polishing. CD: pick for higher strength, straightness and closer diameter tolerance on screw-machine work. Yield strength is 310 MPa in A versus 550 MPa in CD.
