What is 5005?
5005 is a low-magnesium (about 0.8% Mg) non-heat-treatable Al-Mg alloy, slightly stronger than 1000-series pure aluminum, with good formability, weldability and corrosion resistance. Its defining feature is bright, uniform colour after anodizing, so it is used mainly as sheet and coil for architectural curtain-wall panels, decorative trim, vessels and utensils, and electrical enclosures. Strength is low and can only be raised by cold work, work-hardened tempers soften above 150 °C, and machinability is only fair; specify 5052 or 6061 for sustained structural loading. 5005 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 632°C (1,170 °F). 5005 has a yield strength of 138 MPa (20 ksi) and a tensile strength of 159 MPa (23.1 ksi) — weaker than 71% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 68.9 GPa (9.99 Msi).

Working with 5005
Is 5005 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed, generous coolant/lubricant to avoid built-up edge; harder H18/H38 tempers machine cleaner.
Can 5005 be welded?
Excellent by GTAW/GMAW and resistance welding; use 5356 or 5183 filler (1100/4043 acceptable for low-stress joints) — weld zone reverts to near-O strength.
Can 5005 be formed, bent or molded?
Very good cold formability in O/H32/H34; allow generous bend radii above H16 and expect springback; not heat treatable, so strength comes only from cold work.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to 5005. Every 5005 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
