What is 5457?
5457 (A95457) is a low-magnesium Al-Mg sheet alloy in the 5000-series family, non-heat-treatable and supplied in O, H24–H28 and H32–H38 tempers, formulated for bright chemical or electrolytic brightening followed by anodizing. Engineers use it for decorative trim and bright anodized panels where finish quality outweighs strength: 160 MPa yield, 180 MPa tensile, 12% elongation, 48 HB, 176 W/m·K and 46% IACS, with weldability rated 85. Formability (65) is lower than high-purity trim stock, service is limited to about 120 °C, welds anodize a different shade, and the Mg content makes it a poor brazing candidate. 5657 is the closer choice for the brightest anodized finishes. 5457 has a density of 2.69 g/cm³ (0.0972 lb/in³), lighter than 67% of aluminum grades. It melts at 630°C (1,166 °F). 5457 has a yield strength of 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) — weaker than 61% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 5457
Is 5457 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy like other Al-Mg sheet — use sharp polished-flute carbide, high rake, high speed and flood lubricant to avoid built-up edge and surface smear that would show after anodizing.
Can 5457 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW or resistance welded with 5356 or 5554 filler; the weld and HAZ revert toward O-temper strength and will anodize a different shade than the parent sheet.
Can 5457 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent roll forming, bending and moderate drawing in O/H25; in H28/H38 keep bend radii ≥2t and expect springback; avoid deep scratches or die pickup because they are amplified by bright anodizing.
5457 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on 5457?
Designed for chemical or electrolytic brightening followed by clear or dyed anodizing; polishes to a mirror finish, takes conversion coating and paint well, but is a poor brazing candidate due to Mg.
