What is 5154?
5154 is a non-heat-treatable Al–Mg alloy with about 3.5 % magnesium and a small chromium addition, sitting between 5052 and 5083 in strength. It is chosen for welded marine and structural sheet/plate, pressure-vessel and tank work where good seawater corrosion resistance, high weld strength and moderate work-hardened strength are needed. Main limits are that strength comes only from cold work (no ageing response), machinability is mediocre and gummy, and strain-hardened tempers should not be used continuously above roughly 65 °C because of sensitivity to sensitization and stress-corrosion cracking. 5154 has a density of 2.66 g/cm³ (0.0961 lb/in³), lighter than 84% of aluminum grades. It melts at 593°C (1,099 °F). 5154 has a yield strength of 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) — stronger than 54% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 70.3 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with 5154
Is 5154 easy to machine?
Machines like other 5000-series alloys: gummy and prone to built-up edge — use sharp polished high-rake tools, high speeds and flood lubricant; harder H34–H38 tempers give cleaner chips than O.
Can 5154 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with 5356 or 5183 filler; weld metal keeps near-O strength so joints are designed on annealed properties, and 5183/5356 filler avoids the hot cracking seen with 4043 on high-Mg alloys.
Can 5154 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in O/H111; H32 handles moderate bending while H36/H38 need generous bend radii or intermediate annealing at 340–410 °C.
