| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
As-welded deposit | Use these all-weld-metal deposit values when the Al-Mg5 filler wire joins 5000 series and some 6000-series base metals by TIG/MIG: 130 MPa yield, 275 MPa tensile, 17 % elongation, no post-weld treatment. | 130 | 275 | 17 | 62 HB | 29 % IACS |
ODefault Annealed | Use the annealed (M) supply state for welding wire, rivet blanks and parts that must be deep drawn or bent; 145 MPa yield with 20% elongation and formability 70. | 145 | 275 | 20 | 65 HB | 29 % IACS |
Strain hardened from hot working only | Choose this as-fabricated hot-worked state of hot-rolled plate and extruded bar for welded structural blanks; strength sits slightly above annealed at 155 MPa yield with 16 % elongation. | 155 | 285 | 16 | 70 HB | 29 % IACS |
Strain hardened and stabilized, quarter hard | Pick strain-hardened quarter-hard, stabilized sheet and strip when 210 MPa yield must coexist with bend formability; the stabilizing step prevents Mg precipitation softening. | 210 | 305 | 12 | 80 HB | 29 % IACS |
Strain hardened, half hard | Use half-hard cold-drawn wire or strip for rivets and profiles that need 250 MPa yield plus some re-bending capacity; elongation drops to 8 % and formability is limited. | 250 | 330 | 8 | 88 HB | 28.5 % IACS |
Strain hardened, full hard | Choose the full-hard cold-drawn state for rivet wire and fastener blanks requiring high shear strength (320 MPa yield); elongation falls to 5 %, so forming is largely ruled out. | 320 | 385 | 5 | 105 HB | 28 % IACS |

Working with 5B05
Is 5B05 easy to machine?
Annealed material smears and builds up on the cutting edge; use sharp high-rake tooling, high spindle speed and emulsion or alcohol-based lubricant. Cold-worked tempers break chips much better.
Can 5B05 be welded?
TIG and MIG weldability is excellent using matching 5B05 or ER5356 wire; remove the oxide film, oil and moisture completely before welding to prevent porosity. Not suitable for furnace brazing.
Can 5B05 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forming and cold heading are good in the annealed state, but work hardening is rapid; multi-stage deep draws need intermediate annealing at about 340-400 °C. Avoid long holds above 65 °C to prevent sensitisation.

5B05 — frequently asked
What is 5B05 used for?
5B05 is typically used for welding wire, cladding layers and welded aluminum structures. In short: al-Mg welding wire grade; cladding and filler stock; 5A05-class strength.
What is the yield strength of 5B05?
5B05 has a typical yield strength of 145 MPa (21 ksi) and a tensile strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) — weaker than 68% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is 5B05 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, worse than 81% of aluminum grades). Annealed material smears and builds up on the cutting edge; use sharp high-rake tooling, high spindle speed and emulsion or alcohol-based lubricant. Cold-worked tempers break chips much better.
Can 5B05 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100). TIG and MIG weldability is excellent using matching 5B05 or ER5356 wire; remove the oxide film, oil and moisture completely before welding to prevent porosity. Not suitable for furnace brazing.

Cold forming and cold heading are good in the annealed state, but work hardening is rapid; multi-stage deep draws need intermediate annealing at about 340-400 °C. Avoid long holds above 65 °C to prevent sensitisation.
What is the maximum service temperature of 5B05?
5B05 is rated for continuous use to about 80°C (176 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 5B05-O and 5B05-H18?
O is the default condition — use the annealed (M) supply state for welding wire, rivet blanks and parts that must be deep drawn or bent; 145 MPa yield with 20% elongation and formability 70. H18: choose the full-hard cold-drawn state for rivet wire and fastener blanks requiring high shear strength (320 MPa yield); elongation falls to 5 %, so forming is largely ruled out. Yield strength is 145 MPa in O versus 320 MPa in H18.
