What is 5352?

5352 is a registered Al–Mg (≈2.5 % Mg) wrought alloy of the 5052 family, supplied mainly as sheet, coil and wire in the strain-hardened H3x tempers. It is chosen for its combination of moderate strength, very good formability, excellent marine/atmospheric corrosion resistance and clean anodizing response, without any heat-treatment response. It is a rarely stocked alloy compared with 5052/5754, cannot be strengthened by ageing, and loses its cold-worked strength above roughly 120–150 °C. 5352 has a density of 2.68 g/cm³ (0.0968 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of aluminum grades. It melts at 607°C (1,125 °F). 5352 has a yield strength of 195 MPa (28.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) — stronger than 51% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 70.3 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Chemical Resistance SummaryGood in neutral water, seawater spray and most organics; attacked by strong acids and alkalis (pH <4 or >9) and by mercury/chloride-alkali media. Low Mg level keeps it largely free of the stress-corrosion sensitization seen in >3 % Mg alloys.

Working with 5352

Is 5352 easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed, generous coolant/lubrication and chip-clearing geometry to avoid built-up edge.

Can 5352 be welded?

Excellent GTAW/GMAW weldability with 5356 or 5183 filler; do not use 4000 series Si filler (brittle Mg2Si) and expect weld-zone strength near the O temper.

Can 5352 be formed, bent or molded?

Very good cold formability in O/H32; anneal at ~340 °C for severe draws and allow for pronounced springback and possible Lüders (stretcher-strain) marks in the annealed state.
