What is 5070?
5070 is a non-heat-treatable Al-Mg sheet and plate alloy (AlMg4MnZn) in which roughly 4 % Mg with Mn and a zinc addition lifts strength above plain Al-Mg grades. Engineers use it for welded marine and structural sheet: the default condition gives 150 MPa yield, 290 MPa tensile, 17 % elongation and 75 HB, and it is listed in O, H111, H112, H116, H321 and H32-H38. Continuous service is capped at 65 C, machinability is modest (45), and welds soften back toward annealed strength. 5083 is the nearest widely available alternative. 5070 has a density of 2.66 g/cm³ (0.0961 lb/in³), lighter than 84% of aluminum grades. It melts at 575°C (1,067 °F). 5070 has a yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) — weaker than 65% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 17% and the elastic modulus is 70.5 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with 5070
Is 5070 easy to machine?
Machines like other Al-Mg alloys: use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips; harder H3x tempers cut cleaner than O.
Can 5070 be welded?
Excellent GMAW/GTAW and FSW weldability with 5183/5356 filler; HAZ softens back toward the annealed strength, so design joints on O/H111 properties.
Can 5070 be formed, bent or molded?
Form in O/H111 for tight bends; watch for Lüders (stretcher-strain) marks on annealed sheet and increase bend radii sharply in H34–H38.
