What is ER5554?

ER5554 is a moderate-magnesium Al-Mg-Mn filler covered by AWS A5.10 ER5554 (A5554WY, S Al 5554, SAlMg-1), formulated so that welds on 5454 base metal can run hot without the sensitization risk of higher-Mg fillers. It is sold as GMAW spool wire and GTAW rod, giving roughly 250 MPa tensile, 117 MPa yield, 17 % elongation, 60 HB and 134 W/m·K, with service to about 150 °C. It is not brazeable and needs a zincate pretreatment before plating; use ER5356 instead when only ambient-temperature strength matters. ER5554 has a density of 2.69 g/cm³ (0.0972 lb/in³), lighter than 67% of aluminum grades. It melts at 602°C (1,116 °F). Working with ER5554

Is ER5554 easy to machine?

Weld beads machine like 5454 — gummy and prone to built-up edge; use sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed, low feed and generous lubrication.

Can ER5554 be welded?

Designed as GMAW/GTAW filler for 5454, 5154 and 3004 in service above 65 °C; use argon or Ar-He, clean oxide thoroughly, keep interpass temperature below ~120 °C and avoid dilution with Cu- or Si-bearing alloys.

Can ER5554 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn rod/wire; interanneal between draws to keep ductility and avoid surface tearing that causes feed problems.
