What is 5154A?
5154A is the European Al-Mg (AlMg3.5) variant of 5154 with modified Mn and Cr limits, designated EN AW-5154A, non-heat-treatable and strengthened by cold work across H12–H38 plus H111 and H112. It is used interchangeably with 5154 in EN markets for welded structural sheet and plate, pressure vessels and shipbuilding, offering 195 MPa yield, 265 MPa tensile, 12% elongation and a 78 corrosion-resistance rating. Limits: the HAZ drops back to near-O strength after welding, continuous service should stay below 65 °C to avoid β-phase sensitisation, and machinability is only 45. 5083 is the nearest higher-strength Al-Mg alternative. 5154A has a density of 2.66 g/cm³ (0.0961 lb/in³), lighter than 84% of aluminum grades. It melts at 590°C (1,094 °F). 5154A has a yield strength of 195 MPa (28.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) — stronger than 51% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 70 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with 5154A
Is 5154A easy to machine?
Gummy in soft tempers — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed, generous lubricant; chip control improves markedly in H1x/H3x tempers.
Can 5154A be welded?
Excellent with GMAW/GTAW using 5356 or 5183 filler; do not use 4043 (brittle Mg2Si), and expect the HAZ to drop back to near-O strength.
Can 5154A be formed, bent or molded?
Very good cold formability in O/H111; for H22–H38 increase bend radii and bend across the rolling direction; hot forming above ~200 °C risks sensitization if followed by service warm.
