What is 5082?
5082 is a non-heat-treatable Al-Mg (5000 series) alloy with about 4.0–5.0% Mg, close in composition to 5182 but lower in manganese, supplied as sheet, strip and plate (3.3345, AlMg4.5). It combines medium-high strength with good formability, weldability and seawater corrosion resistance, which is why it is used for deep-drawn can end stock, automotive body sheet, tanks and marine structures. Continuous service above about 65 °C should be avoided, because Mg precipitation at grain boundaries sensitizes the alloy to intergranular corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. Machinability is only fair and the alloy tends to stick to tooling; 5182 and 5083 are the closest alternatives. 5082 has a density of 2.65 g/cm³ (0.0957 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of aluminum grades. It melts at 577°C (1,071 °F). 5082 has a yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) — weaker than 70% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 70 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with 5082
Is 5082 easy to machine?
Gummy, long-chipping alloy — use sharp polished-flute carbide tools, high rake, high speed and flood coolant or MQL to prevent built-up edge; harder H3x tempers cut cleaner.
Can 5082 be welded?
Readily GMAW/GTAW welded with 5183 or 5356 filler; do not use 4000 series Si fillers (brittle Mg2Si), and keep interpass temperature low to limit sensitization.
Can 5082 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-drawing and stretch forming in O/H111; watch for Lüders (stretcher-strain) markings on annealed sheet — use temper-rolled or stabilized H2x/H3x for visible surfaces.
