What is 5005A?
5005A (EN AW-5005A, 3.3315, AlMg1(C)) is a low-magnesium Al-Mg sheet alloy, the European variant of 5005 with slightly widened composition tolerance, non-heat-treatable and strengthened by cold work through the H1x–H3x tempers. It is chosen for anodized architectural panels and decorative trim, with 150 MPa yield, 160 MPa tensile, 41 HB, 200 W/m·K and 52 % IACS in the default condition. Strength is low, machinability is poor (40/100) because the alloy is soft and gummy, and service is limited to 150 °C. Use 5052 where higher strength is needed. 5005A has a density of 2.69 g/cm³ (0.0972 lb/in³), lighter than 67% of aluminum grades. It melts at 632°C (1,170 °F). 5005A has a yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) — weaker than 65% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 69.5 GPa (10.1 Msi).

Working with 5005A
Is 5005A easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed and generous lubrication to avoid built-up edge; chip breaking is poor in O/H1x tempers.
Can 5005A be welded?
Excellent by GTAW/GMAW and resistance welding with 5356 or 5183 filler; HAZ softens back toward O-temper so design joints at annealed strength.
Can 5005A be formed, bent or molded?
Very good cold formability — deep draw and spin in O/H22/H24; use larger bend radii and cross-grain bending for H16/H18/H36/H38.
