Working with G9Ni10-QT

Is G9Ni10 easy to machine?

Machines like a 2.5 % Ni low-alloy steel at ~60 % of AISI 1212; use rigid setups and carbide tooling, expect abrasive cast skin and occasional sand inclusions on the first cut.

Can G9Ni10 be welded?

Good weldability with low-hydrogen SMAW/GTAW consumables of matching 2–3 % Ni type; preheat ~100–150 °C, interpass control, and PWHT at 580–620 °C for pressure parts.

Can G9Ni10 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand or investment castings; provide generous fillets and directional solidification with risers, then always normalize+temper (or QT) before use.

What surface finishes work on G9Ni10?

No anodizing; shot blast then epoxy/zinc-rich primer, or zinc/nickel plating — the alloy rusts as readily as carbon steel in humid or marine service.

G9Ni10-QT — frequently asked

What is G9Ni10-QT used for?

G9Ni10-QT is typically used for LNG storage tank fittings, cryogenic valve bodies and low-temperature pressure vessel castings. In short: toughness to −195 °C; cryogenic A352 LC9 casting; weldable nickel cast steel.

What is the yield strength of G9Ni10-QT?

G9Ni10-QT has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is G9Ni10-QT easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (50/100, worse than 53% of steel grades). Machines like a 2.5 % Ni low-alloy steel at ~60 % of AISI 1212; use rigid setups and carbide tooling, expect abrasive cast skin and occasional sand inclusions on the first cut.

Can G9Ni10-QT be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100). Good weldability with low-hydrogen SMAW/GTAW consumables of matching 2–3 % Ni type; preheat ~100–150 °C, interpass control, and PWHT at 580–620 °C for pressure parts.

Can G9Ni10-QT be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand or investment castings; provide generous fillets and directional solidification with risers, then always normalize+temper (or QT) before use.

What is the maximum service temperature of G9Ni10-QT?

G9Ni10-QT is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between G9Ni10 N+T and G9Ni10-QT?

N+T is the default condition — standard delivery condition of EN 10213 low-temperature castings; best balance of strength, ductility and -70 °C notch toughness. QT: choose when higher yield strength and finer bainitic structure are needed in thicker sections while keeping low-temperature toughness. Yield strength is 330 MPa in N+T versus 400 MPa in QT.
