Compare all 12 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Annealed | Pick for maximum ductility — deep drawing, spinning, severe bending and highest conductivity. | 34 | 90 | 40 | 23 HB | 59 % IACS |
Strain hardened from hot working only | Standard temper for thick 1100 plate and extruded shapes where cold rolling is not applicable. | 45 | 95 | 25 | 25 HB | 59 % IACS |
Strain hardened, hot-rolled plate temper | Commercially pure 1100 aluminium supplied as hot-rolled plate with a small amount of incidental strain hardening, giving strength just above the annealed condition while retaining excellent formability, weldability and conductivity. | 90 | 110 | 14 | 28 HB | 58.5 % IACS |
Strain hardened and partially annealed, quarter hard | Same strength class as H12 but with better ductility and flatness stability from the partial anneal. | 90 | 110 | 20 | 27 HB | 58 % IACS |
Strain hardened and partially annealed, half hard | H14-level strength with extra forming reserve — common for deep-drawn and spun 1100 parts. | 100 | 125 | 15 | 31 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened, quarter hard | Light cold work — a compromise when O is too floppy but forming is still moderately severe. | 105 | 110 | 17 | 28 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened, half hard | The default stock temper for 1100 sheet and coil — usable strength with still-excellent bending and welding. | 115 | 125 | 12 | 32 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened and partially annealed, three-quarter hard | H16 strength level with improved bend behaviour for roll-formed profiles. | 125 | 145 | 11 | 37 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened, three-quarter hard | Choose when a stiffer, more dent-resistant panel is needed and only gentle bends are required. | 140 | 145 | 9 | 38 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened and partially annealed, full hard | Full-hard strength with stabilised, flat coil for high-speed stamping. | 145 | 165 | 7 | 43 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened, full hard | Maximum cold-worked strength for flat parts, foil stock and stampings needing springiness rather than bendability. | 150 | 165 | 6 | 44 HB | 57 % IACS |
Strain hardened, extra hard | Very heavily rolled foil and fin stock where the highest as-rolled strength is needed. | 170 | 185 | 3 | 48 HB | 57 % IACS |
What is 1100?
1100 is commercially pure aluminium (99.0 % Al min) with a small controlled copper addition, strengthened only by cold work. It is chosen for outstanding formability, weldability, corrosion resistance and very high thermal/electrical conductivity in items such as heat-exchanger fins, chemical vessels, lighting reflectors, nameplates, spun holloware and deep-drawn parts. Its limits are low strength (it cannot be heat treated), poor machinability due to gumminess, and rapid softening of H tempers above about 150 °C. 1100 has a density of 2.71 g/cm³ (0.0979 lb/in³), heavier than 51% of aluminum grades. It melts at 643°C (1,189 °F). 1100 has a yield strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 125 MPa (18.1 ksi) — weaker than 79% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 1100
Is 1100 easy to machine?
Very gummy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed, generous flood or mist lubrication and large chip clearance to avoid built-up edge; harder H16/H18 tempers finish noticeably better.
Can 1100 be welded?
Excellent by GTAW/GMAW/resistance and brazing; use ER1100 (or ER4043 where cracking is a concern) and accept that the HAZ reverts to O-temper strength.
Can 1100 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability — deep draws, spinning and tight bends (≈0–1 t bend radius in O/H12); anneal at 340–400 °C between severe forming steps.
