What is 1145?
1145 is a high-purity commercial aluminium (min 99.45 % Al) with combined Si+Fe held to 0.55 % max, rolled almost exclusively into foil and thin strip. It is selected for its very high thermal and electrical conductivity, excellent formability and deep-draw/foil rollability, plus good corrosion resistance and a bright, clean surface for lamination and fin stock. Its limits are very low strength (it cannot be heat-treated, only strain-hardened), poor machinability and rapid softening above about 150 °C. 1145 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 646°C (1,195 °F). 1145 has a yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 165 MPa (23.9 ksi) — weaker than 65% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 4% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 1145
Is 1145 easy to machine?
Very gummy and low-strength — use polished high-rake carbide, high speed, sharp tools and flood lubrication; expect burrs and built-up edge, and prefer H18/H19 over O for any chip cutting.
Can 1145 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW/resistance welded with 1100 or 1188 filler, but foil gauges are normally joined by seaming, adhesive lamination or ultrasonic welding; welding fully anneals the H temper locally.
Can 1145 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability in O temper (deep draw, foil embossing); H18/H19 needs generous bend radii or interstage annealing at 340–400 °C.
Manufacturability
