What is Ti Grade 30?

Ti Grade 30 (UNS R53530) is a ruthenium-enhanced variant of Grade 12, supplied within the lean-alloy titanium standard family alongside the commercially pure grades. In the annealed condition it gives 330 MPa yield, 440 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and about 160 HB (80 HRB), with service to 300 °C and a corrosion-resistance rating of 96, which is why it is specified for hot chloride and reducing-acid duty in plate, sheet, pipe and welded tube. Weldability is high (rating 85) but machinability is poor (35) and the alloy costs more than CP Grade 2. Grade 7 or Grade 11 (Pd-bearing) is the nearest alternative where ruthenium-bearing stock is not on hand. Ti Grade 30 has a density of 4.51 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,650°C (3,002 °F). Ti Grade 30 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — weaker than 83% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Corrosion resistance is excellent (96/100), better than 92% of titanium grades.

Galvanic Potential (seawater, vs SCE)-0.05 V
Corrosion ResistanceExcellent96/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryExcellent in seawater, hot chlorides, wet Cl₂, hypochlorites and oxidizing acids; the Co+Pd addition suppresses crevice attack and greatly extends service in hot dilute HCl/H₂SO₄ and in reducing acids compared with unalloyed Ti. Attacked by HF, dry chlorine, and concentrated hot H₂SO₄/H₃PO₄; risk of hydriding above ~80 °C in strongly reducing hydrogen-bearing service.

Working with Ti Grade 30

Is Ti Grade 30 easy to machine?

Machine like CP Ti: low surface speed (25–45 m/min HSS, 60–90 m/min carbide), heavy positive rake, sharp tools, rigid setup and flood coolant to avoid galling, work hardening and chip fires.

Can Ti Grade 30 be welded?

Excellent GTAW/PAW/EBW weldability with matching Grade 30 or Grade 7/11 filler, provided full argon/helium shielding of pool, HAZ and backside keeps weld-metal colour bright silver.

Can Ti Grade 30 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form with generous bend radii (≈2.5–3t) and springback allowance; warm forming at 200–350 °C eases deep draws and heavy plate rolling.

What surface finishes work on Ti Grade 30?

Pickle in HNO₃/HF after hot work to remove alpha case and scale; passive oxide gives the corrosion protection, with anodizing or thermal oxidation used only for wear or colour coding.

Ti Grade 30 has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — weaker than 83% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is Ti Grade 30 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 78% of titanium grades). Machine like CP Ti: low surface speed (25–45 m/min HSS, 60–90 m/min carbide), heavy positive rake, sharp tools, rigid setup and flood coolant to avoid galling, work hardening and chip fires.

Can Ti Grade 30 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Excellent GTAW/PAW/EBW weldability with matching Grade 30 or Grade 7/11 filler, provided full argon/helium shielding of pool, HAZ and backside keeps weld-metal colour bright silver.
