What is Ti Grade 34?

Ti Grade 34 (UNS R53445) is the lower-interstitial, more formable counterpart to Grade 33 within the commercially pure and lean-alloy titanium family. It is chosen where deep forming and enhanced crevice-corrosion resistance are both required, and is stocked as cold-rolled annealed sheet, hot-rolled annealed plate, cold-worked stress-relieved product and as-welded tube. Annealed properties are 330 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and about 160 HB (82 HRB), with service to 300 °C. Machinability is low (rating 35); Grade 33 is the direct alternative when formability is less critical. Ti Grade 34 has a density of 4.51 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,650°C (3,002 °F). Ti Grade 34 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 83% of titanium grades. Chemical Resistance SummaryOutstanding in oxidizing acids, wet chlorine, hypochlorite, seawater and hot chloride brines; Ru+Pd additions extend crevice-corrosion immunity to roughly 250 °C brine and give useful resistance in dilute reducing acids (HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4) where CP Grade 2 corrodes. Attacked by HF, fluoride-bearing acids and anhydrous methanol; avoid dry chlorine and red fuming nitric acid.

Working with Ti Grade 34

Is Ti Grade 34 easy to machine?

Machine like CP Ti: rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD tools, 30–60 m/min, heavy flood coolant and generous feed to avoid work-hardened glazing and fire risk from fine chips.

Can Ti Grade 34 be welded?

Excellent GTAW/GMAW/plasma/EB weldability with matching or Grade 2 Ru-bearing filler; requires full argon/helium shielding of weld, root and cooling metal below 400 °C to prevent embrittlement.

Can Ti Grade 34 be formed, bent or molded?

Low-interstitial chemistry gives good cold bending and deep drawing (typ. 2–3 t bend radius); hot form 600–750 °C, then descale by pickling to remove alpha case.

What surface finishes work on Ti Grade 34?

Pickle in HNO3/HF after hot work; anodize (AMS 2488) or thermally oxidize for anti-galling; plating is rarely used and demands special activation, paint requires abrasion or conversion pretreatment.

Ti Grade 34 — frequently asked

What is Ti Grade 34 used for?

Ti Grade 34 is typically used for formed corrosion-resistant components, chemical process piping and fittings, deep-drawn vessel heads and covers, welded tube for brine and seawater service, heat-exchanger plates and scrubber ducting and liners. In short: most formable Ru-bearing grade; low-interstitial Grade 33; deep-draw corrosion titanium.

What is the yield strength of Ti Grade 34?

Ti Grade 34 has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 83% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is Ti Grade 34 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 78% of titanium grades). Machine like CP Ti: rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD tools, 30–60 m/min, heavy flood coolant and generous feed to avoid work-hardened glazing and fire risk from fine chips.

Can Ti Grade 34 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100). Excellent GTAW/GMAW/plasma/EB weldability with matching or Grade 2 Ru-bearing filler; requires full argon/helium shielding of weld, root and cooling metal below 400 °C to prevent embrittlement.
