What is ERTi-3?

ERTi-3 is a higher-oxygen commercially pure titanium filler wire covered by ASTM B863, matching Grade 3 base metal and used when weld deposits stronger than ERTi-2 are required. It is supplied as cold-drawn, vacuum-annealed wire in as-welded, annealed-wire and stress-relieved conditions, with typical deposit values of 440 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile, 20% elongation, 205 HB and a corrosion resistance score of 93. Service is limited to about 300 °C and ductility is lower than ERTi-2, which remains the choice for tight-radius formed weldments. ERTi-3 has a density of 4.51 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,660°C (3,020 °F). ERTi-3 has a yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 66% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Working with ERTi-3

Is ERTi-3 easy to machine?

Filler wire is rarely machined; if machined, use sharp carbide tools, low speed / high feed, flood coolant and avoid dwell to prevent galling and fire risk from fine chips.

Can ERTi-3 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon torch, trailing and back purge; keep weld and HAZ below ~430 °C in air, clean wire with acetone and use only stainless/clean tooling to avoid Fe pickup — straw/blue tint indicates unacceptable contamination.

Can ERTi-3 be formed, bent or molded?

Wire is cold drawn and vacuum annealed; joint prep should allow spring-back allowance since CP Ti Gr.3 cold-forms with roughly 2–3× the springback of carbon steel.

ERTi-3 — frequently asked

What is ERTi-3 used for?

ERTi-3 is typically used for welding Grade 3 CP titanium sheet and pipe, chemical processing equipment and marine hardware requiring higher strength CP-Ti welds. In short: stronger than ERTi-2; higher-oxygen CP filler; grade 3 matching deposit.

What is the yield strength of ERTi-3?

ERTi-3 has a typical yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 66% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ERTi-3 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, better than 59% of titanium grades). Filler wire is rarely machined; if machined, use sharp carbide tools, low speed / high feed, flood coolant and avoid dwell to prevent galling and fire risk from fine chips.

Can ERTi-3 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100).

What surface finishes work on ERTi-3?

Can ERTi-3 be formed, bent or molded?

Wire is cold drawn and vacuum annealed; joint prep should allow spring-back allowance since CP Ti Gr.3 cold-forms with roughly 2–3× the springback of carbon steel.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-3?

ERTi-3 is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERTi-3-AW and ERTi-3-SR?

AW is the default condition — default condition: undiluted weld metal deposited with inert-gas shielding, no post-weld heat treatment. SR: choose when residual stress or stress-corrosion/hydrogen concerns require post-weld stress relief of the CP-Ti joint. Yield strength is 440 MPa in AW versus 425 MPa in SR.
