What is Ti Grade 14?

Ti Grade 14 (R53414) is the medium-strength, medium-interstitial member of the Ti-Ni-Ru corrosion-resistant alloy family, supplied to ASTM B265/B338. It balances strength and toughness at 360 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile and 25 % elongation, and is used as plate, sheet, forgings and welded tube for chemical and offshore service up to 315 °C. Higher interstitial content reduces cold formability relative to Grade 13 (score 60) and machinability remains low (score 32); availability is limited compared with CP grades. Choose Grade 13 when toughness and forming dominate, or Grade 12 as a lower-cost near-alpha alternative. Ti Grade 14 has a density of 4.51 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,650°C (3,002 °F). Ti Grade 14 has a yield strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 77% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).

What is Ti Grade 14 used for?

  • chemical process vessels
  • offshore piping
  • heat exchangers

Limitations

  • Low strength — 360 MPa (52.2 ksi), worse than 77% of titanium grades

Chemical Resistance SummaryExcellent in seawater, wet chlorine, oxidising acids and hypochlorites; the Ni+Ru additions greatly extend passivity in hot dilute HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4 and sour brines versus Grade 2, and improve crevice resistance to ~250 °C. Attacked by HF, fluoride-bearing acids, concentrated hot reducing acids and dry chlorine; risk of hydrogen pickup if cathodically over-protected.

Working with Ti Grade 14

Is Ti Grade 14 easy to machine?

Machine like CP Ti Grade 2: low surface speed (25–45 m/min carbide), heavy positive rake, high feed, flood coolant and sharp tools to avoid work hardening, galling and chip fires.

Can Ti Grade 14 be welded?

Excellent GTAW/GMAW/plasma/EB weldability with matching or Gr.2 filler, but requires full inert-gas trailing and back-purge below 200 °C to keep welds ductile and prevent contamination.

Can Ti Grade 14 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form with generous bend radii (≈3–4 t) and allow for high springback; warm forming at 200–300 °C markedly improves severe draws.

Ti Grade 14 — frequently asked

What is Ti Grade 14 used for?

Ti Grade 14 is typically used for chemical process vessels, offshore piping and heat exchangers. In short: mid-strength Ti-Ni-Ru alloy; strength-toughness balance; 315 °C service ceiling.

What is the yield strength of Ti Grade 14?

Ti Grade 14 has a typical yield strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 77% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is Ti Grade 14 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (32/100, better than 70% of titanium grades). Machine like CP Ti Grade 2: low surface speed (25–45 m/min carbide), heavy positive rake, high feed, flood coolant and sharp tools to avoid work hardening, galling and chip fires.

Can Ti Grade 14 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Excellent GTAW/GMAW/plasma/EB weldability with matching or Gr.2 filler, but requires full inert-gas trailing and back-purge below 200 °C to keep welds ductile and prevent contamination.

What surface finishes work on Ti Grade 14?

Can Ti Grade 14 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form with generous bend radii (≈3–4 t) and allow for high springback; warm forming at 200–300 °C markedly improves severe draws.

What is the maximum service temperature of Ti Grade 14?

Ti Grade 14 is rated for continuous use to about 315°C (599 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between Ti Grade 14 Annealed and Ti Grade 14 CW-SR?

Annealed is the default condition — standard stocked condition for all corrosion-service product forms; best ductility, formability and weld response. CW-SR: pick when higher yield strength and tighter tolerances are needed on small-diameter bar or tube and forming is not required. Yield strength is 360 MPa in Annealed versus 540 MPa in CW-SR.
