Working with Grade 2H
Is Grade 2H easy to machine?
Machine at low surface speed (25–50 m/min) with sharp, positive-rake carbide, heavy rigid setup and flood coolant; never dwell, and keep depth of cut constant to avoid work-hardened skins and chip fires.
Can Grade 2H be welded?
Excellent GTAW/plasma/EBW weldability with clean surfaces and full argon shielding of the pool, trailing shield and backside; keep interpass area bright silver — straw/blue/grey tints mean contaminated, embrittled welds.
Can Grade 2H be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms well but with high springback and a 2t–3t minimum bend radius; warm forming at 200–400 °C reduces springback, and hot sizing must be followed by descaling and pickling.
Grade 2H chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

|---|---|---|
| Nnitrogen max | ≤ 0.03 | 0.02 |
| Ccarbon max | ≤ 0.08 | 0.02 |
| Hhydrogen max | ≤ 0.02 | 0.01 |
| Feiron max | ≤ 0.3 | 0.15 |
| Ooxygen max; mills aim high in range to guarantee the 400 MPa minimum UTS | ≤ 0.25 | 0.16 |
| residual elements (each)other elements, each | ≤ 0.1 | |
| residual elements (total)other elements, total | ≤ 0.4 | |

What surface finishes work on Grade 2H?
Pickle in HNO3/HF to remove alpha case and scale; anodize (AMS 2488) or use colour anodizing for anti-gall/decorative films, and avoid steel contamination during grinding or polishing to prevent rust staining.

Grade 2H — frequently asked
What is Grade 2H used for?
Grade 2H is typically used for aerospace fasteners, marine hardware, structural brackets and medical instrument components. In short: higher-strength Grade 2; guaranteed 58 ksi minimum; weldable CP titanium.
What is the yield strength of Grade 2H?
Grade 2H has a typical yield strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) — weaker than 79% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.
Is Grade 2H easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, better than 93% of titanium grades). Machine at low surface speed (25–50 m/min) with sharp, positive-rake carbide, heavy rigid setup and flood coolant; never dwell, and keep depth of cut constant to avoid work-hardened skins and chip fires.
Can Grade 2H be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Excellent GTAW/plasma/EBW weldability with clean surfaces and full argon shielding of the pool, trailing shield and backside; keep interpass area bright silver — straw/blue/grey tints mean contaminated, embrittled welds.

Cold forms well but with high springback and a 2t–3t minimum bend radius; warm forming at 200–400 °C reduces springback, and hot sizing must be followed by descaling and pickling.
What is the maximum service temperature of Grade 2H?
Grade 2H is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between Grade 2H-ANN and Grade 2H CW-SR?
ANN is the default condition — default stocked condition for Grade 2H sheet/plate/bar/tube; best combination of formability and the guaranteed 400 MPa minimum UTS. CW-SR: choose for cold drawn bar, wire or tubing needing higher strength and better straightness/surface than annealed, with reduced ductility. Yield strength is 350 MPa in ANN versus 470 MPa in CW-SR.
