What is ERTi-11?

ERTi-11 is a low-oxygen Ti-0.2Pd filler wire to ASTM B863 that matches Grade 11 base metal, using a palladium addition to shift crevice-corrosion behaviour rather than to add strength. It is chosen for welded titanium equipment in reducing acids and hot chlorides and is supplied as TIG cut lengths and spooled wire. Deposits are soft and ductile at 240 MPa yield, 330 MPa tensile and 28% elongation, with a weldability score of 95 and the highest corrosion score in the family at 97; service is limited to about 315 °C. Where the same corrosion behaviour is needed at higher strength, ERTi-7 (Grade 7) is the usual step up. ERTi-11 has a density of 4.51 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,660°C (3,020 °F). ERTi-11 has a yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 90% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).

What is ERTi-11 used for?

Working with ERTi-11

Is ERTi-11 easy to machine?

Filler wire is rarely machined; if machined, treat as CP Ti — slow speeds, sharp tools, heavy flood coolant, avoid chip ignition.

Can ERTi-11 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon, trailing shield and back purge; keep interpass low and joint spotless — any O/N/H pickup embrittles the Ti-0.2Pd deposit.

Can ERTi-11 be formed, bent or molded?

Very ductile in the annealed condition; bends and coils readily but springs back — allow generous bend radii and degrease before welding.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-11?

Pickle in HNO3/HF or use dedicated stainless-free brushes to remove heat tint; can be colour-anodized (AMS 2488) but the natural oxide already gives the corrosion protection.

ERTi-11 — frequently asked

What is ERTi-11 used for?

ERTi-11 is typically used for welding Grade 11 corrosion-resistant titanium equipment, chemical process piping and desalination plant components. In short: most corrosion-resistant Ti filler; palladium-bearing CP grade; highest weldability rating.

What is the yield strength of ERTi-11?

ERTi-11 has a typical yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 90% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ERTi-11 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, better than 64% of titanium grades). Filler wire is rarely machined; if machined, treat as CP Ti — slow speeds, sharp tools, heavy flood coolant, avoid chip ignition.

Can ERTi-11 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (95/100). GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon, trailing shield and back purge; keep interpass low and joint spotless — any O/N/H pickup embrittles the Ti-0.2Pd deposit.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-11?

Can ERTi-11 be formed, bent or molded?

Very ductile in the annealed condition; bends and coils readily but springs back — allow generous bend radii and degrease before welding.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-11?

ERTi-11 is rated for continuous use to about 315°C (599 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERTi-11-AW and ERTi-11 PWHT?

AW is the default condition — default condition: properties of the deposited Ti-0.2Pd weld metal used for joining Grade 11 (and Grade 7/1/2) base material. PWHT: choose when residual stress must be lowered for dimensional stability or stress-corrosion-sensitive service; strength is essentially unchanged, ductility slightly improved. Yield strength is 240 MPa in AW versus 235 MPa in PWHT.

How much does ERTi-11 cost?
