What is Grade Ti-Pd17?

Grade Ti-Pd17 is a palladium-bearing unalloyed cast titanium to ASTM B367, matching wrought Grade 17 chemistry; the palladium addition improves crevice and reducing-acid resistance rather than strength. Default cast properties are 235 MPa yield, 330 MPa tensile, 18 % elongation and 150 HB (80 HRB), with service to 300 °C, supplied as investment or rammed-graphite castings in F, HIP, ANN and HIP+ANN conditions. Engineers specify it for corrosion-critical shapes (corrosion score 97) where ductility matters more than load capacity. Strength is low, machinability is moderate (40) and palladium raises cost; Grade Ti-Pd18 castings are the nearest alternative when higher strength is needed. Grade Ti-Pd17 has a density of 4.51 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,660°C (3,020 °F). Grade Ti-Pd17 has a yield strength of 235 MPa (34.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 92% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).

Working with Grade Ti-Pd17

Is Grade Ti-Pd17 easy to machine?

Machine like CP titanium: sharp uncoated-carbide or coated tools, low surface speed (~30–60 m/min), heavy positive rake, generous flood coolant; galling and built-up edge are the main issues, never dwell in the cut.

Can Grade Ti-Pd17 be welded?

Excellent GTAW/PAW/EBW weldability with matching Grade 17/Ti-Pd filler; requires full argon/helium shielding of pool, trailing shield and backpurge, scrupulous cleanliness, and weld-zone colour checks (silver/straw only).

Can Grade Ti-Pd17 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as vacuum-melted castings (investment shell or rammed graphite); expect ~1.5–2 % shrink allowance, an alpha-case layer to be chemically milled, and weld upgrade of indications per ASTM B367.

What surface finishes work on Grade Ti-Pd17?

Grit blast + pickle (HNO3/HF) to remove alpha case and scale; passivates naturally, can be anodised (AMS 2488) for colour or anti-galling, and polishes to a bright finish; do not plate for corrosion reasons.
