What is ERTi-5?
ERTi-5 is Ti-6Al-4V alpha-beta alloy filler wire, UNS R56400, used to weld Grade 5 and Grade 23 structural titanium where matching strength is required. It is supplied as straightened cut lengths or spooled wire and is reported as-welded, stress-relieved and in the STA condition, with typical deposit values of 895 MPa yield, 965 MPa tensile, 8% elongation and 330 HB (34 HRC). Ductility is low compared with CP fillers, service is limited to about 350 °C, and deposits are sensitive to interstitial pickup; where matching strength is not needed, ERTi-2 gives a more forgiving weld. ERTi-5 has a density of 4.43 g/cm³ (0.16 lb/in³), lighter than 89% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,604°C (2,919 °F). ERTi-5 has a yield strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) and a tensile strength of 965 MPa (140 ksi) — stronger than 80% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 113 GPa (16.4 Msi).

Working with ERTi-5
Is ERTi-5 easy to machine?
Weld deposits machine like Ti-6Al-4V: low speed, high feed, rigid setup, flood coolant, sharp carbide — burr and work-harden readily and never dry-grind (fire risk).
Can ERTi-5 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/PAW/EB/laser with high-purity argon or helium, trailing shield and back purge to keep the bead silver; keep interstitials low, clean wire and joint with acetone, and stress relieve 540–650 °C for thick or fatigue-loaded joints.
Can ERTi-5 be formed, bent or molded?
Wire is supplied straightened or spooled; cold bending of the deposit is limited — hot form base metal above 600 °C rather than cold working the weld.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-5?
Pickle in HNO₃/HF or bead blast to remove alpha case and heat tint, then anodize (AMS 2488) or leave passive; avoid iron contamination from steel tooling and brushes.

ERTi-5 — frequently asked
What is ERTi-5 used for?
ERTi-5 is typically used for aerospace airframe titanium welds, high-strength structural titanium joints, landing gear and engine components and medical implant fabrication. In short: highest-strength titanium filler; matches Grade 5 base metal; aerospace structural welds.
What is the yield strength of ERTi-5?
ERTi-5 has a typical yield strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) and a tensile strength of 965 MPa (140 ksi) — stronger than 80% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is ERTi-5 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (20/100, worse than 68% of titanium grades). Weld deposits machine like Ti-6Al-4V: low speed, high feed, rigid setup, flood coolant, sharp carbide — burr and work-harden readily and never dry-grind (fire risk).
Can ERTi-5 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100). GTAW/GMAW/PAW/EB/laser with high-purity argon or helium, trailing shield and back purge to keep the bead silver; keep interstitials low, clean wire and joint with acetone, and stress relieve 540–650 °C for thick or fatigue-loaded joints.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-5?
ERTi-5 is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between ERTi-5-AW and ERTi-5-STA?
