What is ERTi-9?
ERTi-9 is a Ti-3Al-2.5V (UNS R56320) filler wire to ASTM B863, an alpha-beta lean alloy often described as half-strength Ti-6Al-4V. Engineers use it to weld Grade 9 titanium tube and pipe where moderate strength gain over CP titanium is wanted without losing formability; it is supplied as spooled wire, straightened cut lengths and orbital-welding coils. Typical deposit properties are 585 MPa yield, 690 MPa tensile and 15% elongation, with a 315 °C service limit, weldability score 90 and corrosion score 88. For higher joint strength use ERTi-5 or ERTi-23; for maximum corrosion resistance use a Pd-bearing filler such as ERTi-11. ERTi-9 has a density of 4.48 g/cm³ (0.162 lb/in³), lighter than 71% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,650°C (3,002 °F). ERTi-9 has a yield strength of 585 MPa (84.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) — weaker than 51% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).

Working with ERTi-9
Is ERTi-9 easy to machine?
Weld beads machine like Gr.9 base metal — low speed, high feed, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools and flood coolant to avoid galling and work hardening.
Can ERTi-9 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/PAW/orbital with 99.995% Ar or Ar-He, trailing shield and full back purge; joint and wire must be degreased and kept below ~250 ppm O pickup — a silver/straw bead is acceptable, blue/grey/white is not.
Can ERTi-9 be formed, bent or molded?
Annealed wire bends and coils readily; drawn-to-size rod is straightened and cut, and welded Gr.9 tube can be cold bent to about 3–4 D after PWHT.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-9?
Pickle in HNO₃-HF or bead blast to remove alpha case and heat tint before service; colour anodising and passivation per ASTM F86 give good corrosion and ID marking.

ERTi-9 — frequently asked
What is ERTi-9 used for?
ERTi-9 is typically used for aerospace hydraulic and pneumatic tubing welds, bicycle frame welding and racing exhaust systems. In short: standard Grade 9 tube filler; formability with added strength; orbital-weld friendly.
What is the yield strength of ERTi-9?
ERTi-9 has a typical yield strength of 585 MPa (84.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) — weaker than 51% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.
Is ERTi-9 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, better than 53% of titanium grades). Weld beads machine like Gr.9 base metal — low speed, high feed, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools and flood coolant to avoid galling and work hardening.
Can ERTi-9 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (90/100).

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-9?
ERTi-9 is rated for continuous use to about 315°C (599 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between ERTi-9-AW and ERTi-9 CWSR?
